How to pick a rotation center for Translate/Rotate tool?

Honestly, rotation around custom pivot point (user's rotation center) should be possible without the need to create polylines or any geometries at all. This is such a redundancy, an annoying extra step, I'm sorry. The rotation center plus rotation axis (chosen in the Translate/Rotate dialog) themselves are enough to constitute the exact rotation axis. Speaking of now-after-Christmas wishes, I wish it was simpler in Cloud Compare :)
