Normals computation error - on version 17_11_2024

Post by BSHF1 »

Hi there,

I am running into an issue with my Normals computation. Essentially, on the latest release of Cloud Compare the Normals do not compute properly, and display my point cloud in all white regardless of Object view, however when I try this on 4_11_24 version with the same datasets the process works.

I think this may be related to the output scales, or perhaps I have changed one of my settings in the latest release of CC which may be causing the issue. Documentation available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1buI ... sp=sharing

Let me know if there is any further information I can provide.

Ok, so there was indeed a bug impacting m3c2 and some other tools relying on scalar fields. Here is the fixed version:

However, for the normals, I was not able to reproduce your issue. It looks more as if the lights were off (have you tried to toggle them on and off with F6 and F7?).

We experienced a similar issue.
On CloudCompare v.2.11 we exported a mesh, with color and normals, as ply file.
When we load the mesh stored as ply file with CloudCompare v.2.13.2 on Mac OS, the visualization is ok.
If we load the same file with CloudCompare v.2.13.2 on Windows the visualization of mesh is shifted to white colour. If we toggle the normals off we recover the correct/original color. It looks like the normals are lost. Since it works on Mac OS we assume the ply file is not corrupted. We tried F6/F7 to toggle the light but without success.
We are going to distribute the data of our project but we have the issue that Windows users will not be in the position to get the proper visualization. The perception is that data are corrupted but they are not.

Have you tried with the latest 2.14.alpha version maybe?

Also, are all the materials and colors left to their defaults?

Last, something to consider is also the graphic card driver sadly...
