Ah, there is an extra condition to save a mesh. See the Console (F8), where you should see the following error message:
[SHP] A mesh has to be organized as a triangle fan or a triangle trip (see MultiPatch geometry specifications)

This condition is almost impossible to respect for an arbitrary mesh sadly...
