Not sure to fully understand the part about the fact that the tool is greyed out and not available. Have you validated the 'Translate and Rotate' tool?

I've been successful in getting the excavation unrolled. Thanks for your help. I'd like to export a high quality orthoimage image of the results, What's the best way to do this. Convert to a mesh and then I'm not sure after that.

If you have enough points you can keep the point cloud (and mostly rely on the 'zoom' feature of the 'Display > Render as image' tool).
