Subsample: Active FS?

I'm a bit confused about how Active FS in Subsampling works. Cant find much about it.
Would be happy if someone could explain what the hell I'm doing. :-)

The algorithm uses the min and max values of the active scalar field.

For the min value, it will target a density X, and for the max value it will target a density Y. And in-between, it's a linear interpolation between X and Y.
